This commentary is not meant to address the evils of the wicked ungodly or abusive parent but of the wicked child. We shall address the issue of wicked parenting at a later time.
“Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. The LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.” (Genesis 6:5-6)
God made mankind and then was grieved that HIS creation chose not to follow after His holiness but instead pursued wickedness.
Every godly parent that I know desires that their offspring resembles them in appearance but most importantly in godly character and mutual love and respect.
However, you never know who your child will turn out to be and how they truly feel toward you until they are independent of you.
Cain must have grieved and broken the heart of his parents when he killed their son and his brother Able.
When Amnon raped his sister Tamar, it totally devastated their father King David.
Regardless of our godly parenting and moral living and regardless of our years of provision, personal sacrifices, hard work and moral support of our children, they may turn out opposite of how we raised them and they may choose to subscribe to different morals, values and even a different god than the ONE TRUE GOD whom we introduced them to.
I personally heard a man say that he was sorry that he had fathered one of his children. I thought that this was severe and harsh at the time. But I didn’t know his story or the extent of his pain caused by his child. But now, I have a different and a more mature perspective. No one can hurt you to your core like a child that you have invested your all into and loved with everything in you and with everything that you owned and could borrow.
I don’t feel this way toward any of my children and pray that they don’t ever give me reason to.
But our scripture text indicates that it is possible to experience a level of grief and sorrow over the moral character of one’s offspring to the point that one would regret having fathered or given birth to them.
Example: Your child raped his own grandmother (YOUR MOTHER) and murdered his own siblings (YOUR OTHER CHILDREN) without having any mental or medical defect or disease and without remorse, repentance or regret but with absolute amusement. Regardless of humanity’s attempts to but a diagnoses on this evil and mitigate and medicate it into submission, it is what he loves and it is who he is.
Some well-intentioned parents deny this truth because they have unknowingly made an idol god out of their ungodly, rebellious, murderous, disrespectful, deceitful, selfish, unloving and discompassionate child. And some have forgotten that we all were born sinners with a love for sinning.
Now let us be clear. Our scripture text reveals some harsh realities that none of us want to face about our offspring. But if YHVH could feel sorrow for having created human being who chose sin over holiness and the character of the adversary over the character of their FATHER, what makes us think that we would escape such sorrows in our lives?
The best that we can do for a wicked child after raising them up in godliness and holiness and after demonstrating moral integrity before them, is to pray for them.
When our children were in our custody and under our wing, they were accountable to us and under our supervision. But when they become adults, they are accountable to GOD.
TURN THEM OVER TO GOD AND PRAY THAT THEY REPENT.
SAVE THE ONES YOU CAN AND CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR THE ONES YOU CAN’T BUT DON’T EVER SACRIFICE THE SAFETY AND WELL-BEING OF THE FAITHFUL CHILD IN FAVOR OF THE WICKED ONE. THIS IS A DISTASTEFUL AND AN UNRIGHTEOUS THING IN THE SIGHT OF GOD. (Deuteronomy 21:18-21, Proverbs 3:32-34)
