There comes a time when hurt is no longer painful and cries no longer produces tears; when the ones that caused our injuries don’t matter to us anymore and the ones that we once longed for are no longer missed or desired.
If tortured repeatedly and made to suffer for too long, we tend to shut down emotionally and physically in order to survive. It is an automatic self-preservation mode. We become cold and virtually impervious to pain stimuli and oblivious to affections, sentiments and emotions.
Sometimes we become hard like the life we were forced to live and the abuses we were forced to endure. Sometimes we become insincere like the people we were forced to interact with. And we become task driven, disconnected and impersonal like those who methodically tortured, stripped and divested us of our humanity and extinguished any spark of divinity that once may have existed…
